Tough It Out At The Spartan Race + A Race Entry Giveaway

You know you can run – but can you run, jump, lift, crawl and more over the course of a few hours?

Although not pure running events, obstacle course races are a great way to add variety to your training and strength to your running. And conveniently, the Reebok Spartan Race (voted the #1 obstacle course race by Outdoor Magazine!) is once again making its way to Milwaukee!

This one is billed as a Sprint Race, which means it’s appropriate for entry-level obstacle course athletes. However, don’t be fooled into thinking it will be a walk in the park – even experienced runners and athletes will find themselves tested by the course.

Find yourself at least a tad curious? Here are the details you need to know:

Date: Saturday, November 1

Start Time: Starting at 8am, waves of 200 athletes will be released every 15 minutes across 5 groups (Elite, Confirmed, Morning, Afternoon, Late Afternoon). Your exact start time in the group you registered for will be posted on the event website a few days prior to event date.

Location: Miller Park

Cost: $75-$150, depending on when you register

Gear: Reebok recently released its All-Terrain shoe, which is considered the optimal shoe for competing in a Spartan Race. Lightweight, breathable, drainage ports and sheds mud. Sounds perfect!

What you’re getting into: 3 miles with 10+ obstacles. Water. Mud. Etc.

We wish we could fill you in on the types of obstacles you might face on the course, however they appear to be top secret. According to the event website:

There are some staples in our repertoire. There are also some venue specific and terrain inspired obstacles.

We will not, however, spell it out for you. As well, you will get no course map to inspect.

There is fire, mud, water, barbed wire, and occasionally Hell on Earth.

There WILL be obstacles to catch you off guard. Curve balls, so to speak.

Get over it.

So it’s a tad intimidating – but we’re always up for a good challenge. Plus, we see nothing wrong with gaining a bit of extra strength to power us through our fall 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, marathons and ultras!

Are you ready to push yourself to the max?

We’re giving away one race entry (good at any open heat in any 2014 Spartan Races in the continental US) to a lucky MKE runner! To enter:

  • Tell us what strength training exercise makes you sweat the most

For additional entries do the following and let us know you did each action in separate comments:

Good luck! We’ll pick a winner at random on Tuesday, April 15 and announce the winner on Wednesday, April 16. Be sure to check back on Wednesday morning to see if you’re our winner!*

Keep Running MKE – you’re doing great!

*Winner will have 48 hours to claim their prize by emailing keeprunningmke@gmail.com. If the prize is not claimed within that time frame, we will select a new winner.

  1. I did the Spartan Race at Miller Park last year – by FAR my favorite race. It even beats the amazing Disney races, in my opinion.

Tell us what strength training exercise makes you sweat the most: I do CrossFit, so a little bit of everything for me. I think overhead presses are the roughest for me, but I love them.
