According to the USDA, a slice of pumpkin pie has 323 calories. As every runner knows, this is about the number of calories you’ll burn racing a 5k. All the more reason to participate in one of the many local turkey trots before tucking into your turkey dinner.
So read on to learn about a few races taking place on Thanksgiving Day this year. Stick with us and you’ll also learn how you can win a race entry to this year’s Drumstick Dash!
Pewaukee Turkey Trot
When: Thursday, Nov. 28, 7:30 a.m.
Where: Nettesheim Park, Pewaukee
Cost: $20 for individuals
Details: Join the Pewaukee Parks and Recreation Department for a 3+ mile fun run. The first place male and female in each age group will win a prize. Note: This is a fun run – not a certified race.
Drumstick Dash
When: Thursday, Nov. 28, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Miller Park
Cost: $30 for individuals ($35 after Nov. 6); $20 for kids ages 5-12
Details: This 5k race is both runner and walker friendly. The event is chip timed and awards are given to the top three male and female overall winners. No age group awards. The event benefits Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and a food drive will also take place before the start of the race.

Talmer Turkey Trot
When: Thursday, Nov. 28, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Veteran’s Terrace, Burlington
Cost: $25 for individuals ($30 after Oct. 31)
Details: Both runners and walkers are welcome at this 5k race. All participants will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag. Awards will be given to the top 3 overall male and female finishers as well as the top 3 finishers in each age group. The race benefits Love, Inc. and a food drive will be held before the race. Raffle tickets will be awarded for items donated with raffle prizes including homemade pies and turkeys.

5k Turkey Trot & Gobble Gallop
When: Thursday, Nov. 28, 9 a.m.
Where: Thiensville Village Park
Cost: $25 for individuals
Details: This chip-timed race benefits the Mequon Nature Preserve and Balance, Inc. Participants receive a t-shirt and can purchase $5 raffle tickets for a 50/50 raffle. In addition to the chip-timed 5k run/walk, there will also be a 50-meter dash for kids ages 10 and under.

The Run Turkey Run
When: Thursday, Nov. 28, 9 a.m.
Where: Riverside Park, Watertown
Cost: $25 for individuals; $10 for the 1k Kids Fun Run
Details: Participants will enjoy a scenic, chip-timed race that is newly USATF certified. Participants who register before November 8 will receive a long sleeve, wicking t-shirt. Proceeds from the race benefit Watertown Family Aid.

St. Leonard’s Turkey Trot

Where: St. Leonard’s Church, Muskego
Cost: $15; $45 for families
Details: All participants receive a t-shirt and goodie bag. Awards will be given to the 1st through 3rd place overall winners as well as age group winners.

For Thanksgiving, corn casserole is a family tradition from my childhood. Once I had my own family, I introduced it and it’s been a big hit. And it’s super-easy to make! Jellied cranberry sauce in a can is another favorite too!
We adore corn casserole – it’s less common than mashed potatoes and stuffing, but just as delicious!
