The Madison Mini Celebrates its 5th Anniversary + A Giveaway!

You’re probably wondering what a post about a Madison race is doing on a site devoted to MKE running. Well, it just so happens that if you raced the Rock ‘n Sole Half Marathon in June, you should be very interested in taking a short drive over to our State’s capitol for the Madison Mini Marathon. What’s in it for you, you ask? Well, for starters, if you race both Rock ‘n Sole and the Madison Mini, you’ll receive an extra medal for completing the M2 challenge.

We recently chatted with Anna Ryan from Vision Event Management about this year’s race. Read on to learn what makes this race one of the top half marathons in the country and why you shouldn’t slack on hillwork during training.

Runner’s World recently chose the Madison Mini as one of the top half marathons in the country. What makes this race stand out?

The Mini is a unique race with many amenities for runners including fantastic course support, ample amount of helpful and friendly volunteers, a fun atmosphere and a fabulous setting in the heart of Madison. The 14th Mile Post-Race Party on the Terrace overlooking Lake Mendota can’t be missed. The medal doubles as a bottle opener, all participants receive a t-shirt (tech shirt for half marathon) and a refreshing cold beer for those ages 21 and older. In recent years, a Kids’ Run has also been added for those ages 10 and under. The mascots start them off and the kids have a blast as they all wear #1 bibs and receive a medal and t-shirt.

Can you tell us a bit about the course. Any helpful hints for runners?

It is gorgeous and hits the great landmarks of Madison including: Capitol Square, the World Famous Dane County Farmer’s Market, State Street, Camp Randall Stadium, Kohl Center, the Arboretum, Picnic Point and the University of Wisconsin Campus. The course features some nice elevation variety as well.  Participants will have some nice rolling hills throughout the course, but a nice and flat final two miles.  There are also 10 aid stations on course featuring water, Gatorade, port-o-lets and medical personnel.  If the weather warrants, there will also be five misting stations along the route to keep participants cool.

Is there anything new or different happening at the race this year?

As we are excited to celebrate our 5th Anniversary we are also recognizing those who have been with us from year one. Our Alumni Running Club for the Half Marathon will receive a commemorative running hat. BMO Harris Bank is our new title sponsor and they will be giving all participants a cinch bag. On race day they will have cow bells for spectators to cheer on their loved ones. Capital Brewery is new this year and will be serving one free Lake House beer to those participants ages 21 and older.

What is the M2 challenge and how can racers participate?

It is for participants who register and run both the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole Run Half Marathon and the Madison Mini-Marathon. They receive a third additional medal at the post-race party in Madison. New this is year is a chance to win a trip to the Phoenix Marathon courtesy of BMO Harris Bank. In addition, prizes are awarded to the Top 3 Males/Females of the challenge!

    Hmm half marathon training tip: If you can, do a long run longer than 13.1 so that when race day comes you are confident you can cover the distance.

  6. Half marathon training tip: Run with people on long runs. I have a bunch of friends who aren’t as excited about running as I am and who aren’t training, but I can usually convince them to do a long run (or the second half of a long run) with me once in a while. Long runs are mentally challenging for me, so chatting keeps me positive.

  12. Half Marathon Training tip: The most important night of sleep is actually 2 nights before the event. Make sure you get a good 8 hours of sleep that night! It is also important to start carbohydrate loading on that day as well. With these tips you’ll have maximum energy for your 1/2!

  19. My best half training tip: Don’t get discouraged. There will be hard runs, there will be runs where you might be questioning where you ever got the idea to run 13.1. Push through it. It gets better. 🙂

  25. Tip for training: Listen to your body. It’s okay to take a few days off when your body tells you it needs it.

  27. Although someone already said it, i think it is worth repeating that running 13 miles (or more) before race day is really beneficial, not only for your stamina, but also mentally (you know you’ve covered that distance once, you CAN do it again!).

  28. Half marathon tip: Come up with a mantra of some sort that you can tell yourself when the race gets tough. It will help you get through those final miles and push to the end. Also…. have fun!
